Delhi NCR Air Taxi Plan: 5-Minute Commute Dream? eVTOL Trials May Begin by 2026

Hours stuck in traffic could soon become history. A bold Delhi NCR Air Taxi proposal is aiming to cut travel time between Connaught Place (CP), Gurugram and Jewar International Airport to just 5–7 minutes. If trials succeed, this futuristic solution may redefine urban mobility in India’s most congested region.

But what exactly is being planned — and when could it become reality?

What Are eVTOLs?

eVTOLs (electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles) are electrical flying vehicles. These vehicles are mostly like helicopters but work on electric flying technology. They are small like helicopters and do not need much space to land.

They take off vertically and land at specific locations. These can land on small landing pads called vertiports, including rooftops of buildings, offices, hospitals and other compact spaces.

If introduced to the public after successful testing, they could become a major relief for people who spend hours daily in traffic jams. Most designs are made to carry one pilot and four passengers.

Why Air Taxis Now?

Last week, an industrialist flew by helicopter from Mumbai to Pune to avoid heavy traffic jams and attend a meeting. It saved significant time.

Now imagine similar relief in Delhi NCR — one of India’s most traffic-hit regions. Even after construction of multiple flyovers and expansion of metro networks, commuters still spend hours on the road. During working hours, traffic congestion becomes unavoidable.

The proposed Delhi NCR Air Taxi aims to address this growing urban mobility crisis.

Companies Working on the Project

Two major players are actively involved:

Sarla Aviation

Sarla Aviation is working to reduce commute time in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi NCR. The company aims to become one of the world’s largest producers of air taxis, targeting 1,000 air taxis annually. A manufacturing facility is being set up in Andhra Pradesh.

The ePlane Company

The ePlane Company, incubated at IIT Madras, is developing a compact design suitable for urban mid-mile travel. It is the first company to receive Design Organisation Approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is currently involved in safety certification processes. Approvals will play a crucial role before commercial launch.

How Will Delhi NCR Air Taxi Work?

The proposal under discussion aims to connect Connaught Place, Gurugram and Jewar International Airport by air. The trial period is expected between 2026 and 2028.

If operational, the Delhi NCR Air Taxi could reduce a 1.5-hour road journey to just 5–7 minutes. That would be a dramatic shift in daily commuting patterns.

A proposal by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) also supports the air taxi plan to address traffic congestion in Delhi NCR.

Benefits of Delhi NCR Air Taxi

Initially, the focus may be on medicine transport, organ movement and medical emergencies before expanding to public use.

Key potential benefits include:

Time saving
Reduced pollution due to electric technology
Reduced traffic congestion
Sustainable urban mobility

Many major companies are working on this project. If everything goes well and government and aviation agency approvals are granted, the dream of reaching from Delhi to Gurugram in a few minutes could become possible.

Why It Matters for Public Life

Spending hours in traffic is not easy for working professionals. Daily commuting consumes time and energy, leaving little opportunity for family or personal life. Office workload combined with long traffic hours creates continuous stress.

The Delhi NCR Air Taxi is being seen as a practical solution to this everyday urban struggle. If implemented successfully, it may offer a fast, affordable and sustainable alternative to congested city travel.

Still a Proposal — But a Promising One

As of now, it remains an upcoming proposal. Trials are expected between 2026 and 2028. Government clearance and DGCA certification will determine its final rollout.

If approved, this project could mark a turning point in urban transport in India.

For now, it is a vision — but one that could soon change how Delhi NCR moves.
